This
list, although not comprehensive, is offered to help you be as
informed as possible when choosing WebWolf Services as your web
hosting or site design supplier. Need info on a term not shown

Bandwidth (Data transfer or traffic) This is the
amount of data that is transferred each time someone views your
website or you upload or download files to or from your web
space. Each time a webpage, an image or other file is accessed,
bandwidth is generated.
CGI bin (Common Gateway Interface)
A directory for storage of scripts (programs) used to produce
dynamic content on a web site such as guest books, visitor
counters, discussion
boards or email forms.
cPanel
The control panel which allows you administrative access to the
functions related to your webspace such as setting up email
accounts.
Domain Name
A set of alphanumeric characters followed by a suffix such as
.com, .net, .org, or .info. WebWolfServices.com is an example of
a domain name.
DNS The
Domain Name System is the system that
translates internet domain names (e.g.,
webwolfservices.com) into IP numbers (e.g.,
165.113.245.2) so that other computers connected to the internet
can find that domain.
Email: POP3 account (Post Office
Protocol) The protocol used to transfer email from
and to your computer's email client such as Eudora or Outlook.
The cPanel process used to set up email accounts has an
automatic feature to set up your email in Microsoft Outlook or
Microsoft Outlook Express.
Email: Webmail An application that allows
you to read and write email using a web browser from anywhere in
the world.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Used for transferring files over the internet. FTP is used to
download or upload a file from or to a server using the
Internet. Applications such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP (or Fetch for
Apple computer users) are used for
this activity. cPanel also has a file upload action which will
allow you to upload files from your desktop to your web space.
MySQL Application used in ecommerce website
solutions and other database driven applications to hold a
collection of data. SQL databases are used to store information
such as ecommerce store inventories, postings to a discussion
board, survey results or postings to a guestbook..
Pronounced “my ess cue
el” and not “my SEE kwill.”
Nameservers
Addresses (e.g., ns1.webwolfservices.com and
ns2.webwolfservices.com), much like your house address, which
point your domain to the proper web hosting server so that when
someone enters your URL in their brower's address bar, your web
page is displayed correctly in their browser. You will use the
nameservers sent to you in your Welcome to WebWolf email after
signing up for a WebWolf Services hosting account.
Parking
Domain names registered with the InterNIC (and therefore
reserved), but not active for website or ecommerce service.
Parking domain names is useful if you have a domain name that
you would like to reserve, but do not intend to use immediately.
PHP (Hypertext Pre-processor) A server side
scripting language used to create dynamic content. The ecommerce
solutions from WebWolf Services use PHP scripts.
POP
(Post Office Protocol) The
Internet standard for inbound mail from your web hosting
account. POP technology allows you to retrieve email from your
web hosting account and download it to your local computer via
an email software program.
Propagation
The time it takes for your DNS settings to register
across the Internet and become completely active.
SMTP
(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
The Internet standard for host-to-host mail transport. SMTP
servers control all the outgoing mail from your domain based web
hosting account.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
Protocol which allows transmitting private documents and data
via the Internet. SSL uses a private key to encrypt data
transferred over a SSL connection. The protocol is necessary
when collecting confidential user information such as cardit
card numbers. The URL of a page protected by SSL will start with
https: instead of http:
Storage space Measured in Megabytes or Gigabytes, this
is the amount of space your account is allowed to utilize for files (pictures, documents, etc) on the
WebWolf Services server.
Subdomain
An address which operates just below your top level
address. Subdomains are easy to remember addresses that serve as
extensions of your top level domain name. A subdomain looks like
this: anything.mydomain.com
URL
(Uniform Resource Locator) A web
address which can be typed into your browser. By typing the
address "www.webwolfservices.net"
into your Internet web browser, you'll be taken to the WebWolf
Servcices website.
Webmail
An Internet address associated with your hosting
account, where you can go to send and retrieve your email,
rather than having to download it to your local computer.
